Saturday Long Run: Mt. Bonnell and Scenic (RFTW Reconnaissance Version)

Water stations are normal this week. You may want to carry your own water still, if you are starting way before or after the 5:45 start window that water is usually out there, or if you are ad libbing on route variations.

THE ROUTES

3 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Head to bike path on north side of Cesar Chavez heading towards Mopac. Go to Veterans around AHS track and up to LA Blvd. Turn around there, and return to HQ, retracing your steps to GZLs HQ. NOTE: This is the approximate 5K turnaround for RFTW.

5 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Head to bike path on north side of Cesar Chavez towards Mopac. Veterans around AHS track and up to LA Blvd. LA Blvd out to Exposition. Right up Exposition to Enfield. Turn around at Enfield, and retrace your steps to GZLs HQ. 

6.5 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Head to bike path on north side of Cesar Chavez towards Mopac. Veterans around AHS track and up to LA Blvd. LA Blvd out to Exposition. Right up Exposition to Enfield. Left on Enfield over to LA Blvd. Left on LA Blvd back to Mopac, to Veterans around AHS track, to bike path along Cesar Chavez and to GZLs HQ.

Right up Exposition to Enfield. Left on Enfield over to Rockmoor Ave. Right on Rockmoor up to Bridle Path. Right on Bridle Path over to Robinhood Trail. Left on Robinhood up to Windsor. Left on Windsor over to Matthews Drive. Left on Matthews down to Stevenson. Right on Stevenson over to Scenic. Left down Scenic to Kennelwood. Left on Kennelwood over to Rockmoor. Right on Rockmoor to Cherry Lane. Right on Cherry to Scenic (name change). Scenic empties into LA Blvd. LA Blvd back to Mopac, to Veterans around AHS track, to bike path along Cesar Chavez and to GZLs HQ.

Left on Scenic, and then take hard right onto Scenic at water’s edge. Follow Scenic left and up up the hill. At top of hill, continue down Scenic to Kennelwood. Left on Kennelwood over to Rockmoor. Right on Rockmoor to Cherry Lane. Right on Cherry to Scenic (name change). 12.4 Miles: Your map is here. This is most of the RFTW course, plus Mt. Bonnell. Start at GZLs HQ. Head to bike path on north side of Cesar Chavez towards Mopac. Veterans around AHS track and up to LA Blvd. LA Blvd out to Exposition. Right up Exposition to Enfield. Left on Enfield over to Rockmoor Ave. Right on Rockmoor up to Bridle Path. Right on Bridle Path over to Robinhood Trail. Left on Robinhood up to Windsor. Right on Windsor over to Pecos Drive. Left on Pecos all the way up to 35th. Left on 35th over to Mt. Bonnell Road. Right on Mt. Bonnell Road up, up, up to parking lot and base of steps. Turn around at the base of the steps, and head back to HQ, down Mt. Bonnell Rd. to 35th to Pecos. RIGHT on Pecos down to Scenic, and take a right onto Scenic. Continue around Scenic, and then take hard right onto Scenic at water’s edge. Follow Scenic left and up up the hill. At top of hill, continue down Scenic to Kennelwood. Left on Kennelwood over to Rockmoor. Right on Rockmoor to Cherry Lane. Right on Cherry to Scenic (name change). Scenic empties into LA Blvd. LA Blvd back to Mopac, to Veterans around AHS track, to bike path along Cesar Chavez and to GZLs HQ. 

14 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Head to bike path on north side of Cesar Chavez towards Mopac. Veterans around AHS track and up to LA Blvd. LA Blvd out to Exposition. Right up Exposition to Enfield. Left on Enfield over to Rockmoor Ave. Right on Rockmoor up to Bridle Path. Right on Bridle Path over to Robinhood Trail. Left on Robinhood up to Windsor. Right on Windsor over to Pecos Drive. Left on Pecos all the way up to 35th. Left on 35th over to Mt. Bonnell Road. Right on Mt. Bonnell Road up, up, up to parking lot and base of steps. Continue on Mt. Bonnell Road to next right hand street, which is Mt. Bonnell Drive. Right on MBDrive over and across Balcones to Edgemont Drive. Left on Edgemont to just past the third short left hand street (Live Oak), and when your GPS beeps 7 miles, turn around and return Edgemont to MB Drive back to Mt. Bonnell Road, back to foot of steps, and down Mt. Bonnell Rd. to 35th to Pecos. RIGHT on Pecos down to Scenic, and take a right onto Scenic. Continue around Scenic, and then take hard right onto Scenic at water’s edge. Follow Scenic left and up up the hill. At top of hill, continue down Scenic to Kennelwood. Left on Kennelwood over to Rockmoor. Right on Rockmoor to Cherry Lane. Right on Cherry to Scenic (name change). Scenic empties into LA Blvd. LA Blvd back to Mopac, to Veterans around AHS track, to bike path along Cesar Chavez and to GZLs HQ.

Scenic empties into LA Blvd. LA Blvd back to Mopac, to southside trail, over to Congress, up and over LB Lake at Congress bridge, then northside trail back to HQ.

Continue around Scenic, and then take hard right onto Scenic at water’s edge. Follow Scenic left and up up the hill. At top of hill, continue down Scenic to Kennelwood. Left on Kennelwood over to Rockmoor. Right on Rockmoor to Cherry Lane. Right on Cherry to Scenic (name change). Scenic empties into LA Blvd. LA Blvd back to Mopac, to southside trail, over to Congress, to the Boardwalk, and out to I-35. Up and across LB Lake at I-35, to northside trail. Then, northside trail back to HQ.

HERE ARE SUGGESTED LONG RUN WORKOUTS FOR RACES THAT ARE IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU’RE NOT CURRENTLY RACING, KEEP YOUR FITNESS BY ALTERNATING A LONGER LONG RUN AND A RECOVERY LONG RUN ON SUCCESSIVE WEEKENDS, DEPENDING ON YOUR CURRENT TRAINING LEVELS. (Ex: Alternate a 10-12 mile run with an 8-10 mile run).

·      Sept 29th (Berlin): Run smart, run with joy!

·      Oct 5th-6th (St. George, Lisbon): Taper Time. 8-12 miles, with last 4 @ MGP. Start nice and relaxed, and finish last 4 miles at honest MGP.

·      Oct 13th (Chicago): Taper Time. 12-16 miles, with last 6 @ MGP. Start nice and relaxed, and finish last 6 miles at honest MGP.

·      Oct 20th (Columbus, Toronto): Taper Time. 14-18 miles, with last 8-10 @ MGP. Start nice and relaxed, and finish last 8-10 miles at honest MGP.

·      Nov 3rd (New York, Las Vegas): 12-14 miles recovery long run. Cut back from last week.

·      Nov 10th (Every Woman’s): 18-20 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 20 mile max.

·      Nov 24th (Phillie): 16-20 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 20 mile max.

·      Dec 8th (CIM):  14-18 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 18 mile max.

·      Jan 19th, 2025 (Houston): 10-14 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 14 mile max.

·      Feb 16th, 2025 (Austin): 8-10 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 10 mile max.
