  • Gazelles Never Quit - Kurt Wilkin's Story at the Austin Marathon

    Feb 22, 2010

    http://news8austin.com/content/top_stories/default.asp?ArID=267606

How far would you go to complete your ultimate goal?

One runner was faced with that exact question at this month's Austin Marathon when he thought his race was over.

"I had trained a lot. I was very hydrated. I had seven ‘goos’ that morning. I had water at every water stop and then around mile 24, I started feeling out of it a little bit," Austin Marathon runner Kurt Wilkin said.

Wilkin was less than a mile away from the finish line when he collapsed.

"At 25 and a half or so, I thought I had crossed the finish line, and I was just relaxing. The next thing I know, people are waking me up, pouring water on me," he said.

Wilkin was put in an ambulance, given three bags of IV and taken to the hospital. Despite a lot of training, he would not finish the marathon or the seven race distance challenge he'd worked so hard to complete.

"It was a little scary at the time. Especially knowing my wife and kids were there wondering where Daddy was," Wilkin said.

But that's just where the story begins.

"I convinced the doctors to let me go and finish the last few blocks of the marathon," he said.

Wilkin would not settle for finishing the race another day. He wanted to finish it right then, and he convinced his wife to take him back to the same spot where he thought he had failed.

"I said, 'You know what? I want to go do it. I don't care what the time is.' I walked across the finish line just to accomplish it, and just to be done. It gave me a sense of accomplishment. I was happy to chalk it off my list," Wilkin said.

Although the race took a little longer than he had planned, Wilkin did finish it.

"In seven hours versus three hours and 53 minutes," he said.

Kurt Wilkin said he's now telling his wife, no more full marathons. He said he’ll stick to half marathons from now on.

  • Kerrigan, Reiser, Reubel Take Age-Group Titles in 2009-2010 Distance Challenge

    Feb 18, 2010

It was another banner year for Gazelles participating in the Austin Distance Challenge. Comprised of seven races over six months, the ADC offers Central Texas runners an opportunity to build up to the Austin Marathon by competing in a two 10K’s, a 10-Miler, two Half Marathons, a 20 Miler, and the Marathon held in February each year. This year the ADC also offered a Half-Track to runners who had no interest in running 26.2 miles.

On the Full Track side, Adam Reiser and Ivi Kerrigan claimed first place in their respective age groups while also placing second overall. Kerrigan’s 3:14 in the marathon was good enough for a Top-20 female finish and number two in DC participants.

Also claiming an age group award was Allison Hall with a third place finish in the 30-34 category. Hall trailed fellow Gazelle Martha Broyles all season as they sat 3-4 in the rankings, but overtook her in the marathon with a personal best 4:05.

Others claiming finisher awards for the Distance Challenge are: Amy Farley (4th, 35-39), Brian Wilson (4th 35-39), Rich Martin, Eric Overton, Kurt Wilkin, Linda Michael (6th 45-49), and Steve Piche (6th, 45-49). Worth noting is that the ’09-’10 season was Overton’s 12th to complete.

On the Half-Track side, new Gazelle Yvonne Ruebel took top honors in the 25-29 age group, staving off close competition from the second and third place finishers. David Eiben used his personal best 1:32 at the 3M Half Marathon to take 2nd in the 40-44 age group, and Grace Payne finished with a commanding lead over her third place competitor to take 2nd in the 45-49 age group.

The final rankings for the 2009-2010 Austin Distance Challenge can be found at www.austindistancechallenge.com. An end of season party where all participants receive their finisher’s medals and jackets will be held at RunTex Riverside on the weekend of March 13, with more details to be announced at a later time.
