Bernard Wins Decker as Gazelle Herd Runs Well

Bernard Manirakiza, cousin to head Gazelle, Gilbert Tuhabonye, avenged his defeat at the EAS Run for the Water 10 Miler last month by outpacing rival Derek Yorek over the final hills to win the Decker 20K on Sunday Dec. 2.

Overcoming an unwelcome and unseasonably humid morning, Bernard overtook Yorek in the final half-mile to claim first place. Cousin Gilbert came in sixth and a host of other speedy Gazelles peppered the top 25.

The lady Gazelles had an especially strong showing as Michelle Maton placed third overall in the female division, ever-strong Ivi Kerrigan won her age group, Caroline Newman placed fifth in hers, and a host of other runners displayed great toughness in battling the humidity.
